"I will tell you of a perfume
which my mistress has
from the graces and the gods of love;
when you smell it,
you will ask of the deities
to make you only a nose."
-- Catullus

Perfumes of Passion

In every person's psyche is the hidden hope that they could just discover the secret ingredient that would make them more attractive. Perfumes have always been approached from that point of view.

Traditionally, they looked for it in other animals. As if the musk from the dear, ambergris from the sperm whale, castoreum from the beaver or civet from the mongoose like cat was the magical ingredient. The only one still available in a non-synthetic version is civet and we don't offer it because although the animals are not killed during extraction that are caged and treated inhumanly. In today's world of synthetic perfumery profusion these scents are only suggested through chemicals.

We believe with both animal scents and synthetic copies the perfumers missed what Catullus was offering because the ingredient is inherent in our own bodies. In this section we are going to get under (or at least on) your skin. It's not for the squeamish or the faint hearted. It's going to test you to the limit and anytime you want you can decide to have us do all the work for you just ask.

But I can personally guarantee you if you stay with this process you will enjoy it a lot more when you do your own blending. You will also find out a great deal about yourself.

Test of a Perfumer

Enough written and read, now it's time to test your commitment as one of the few natural perfumers. If you have decided to begin to create your own personal blending then we want you to start a perfume journal. Purchase something hard bound and small enough so you can carry it around with you. Every day make one entry, and every time you make an entry be sure to date it.

Your First Blend (may there be many more) Starts with You

To create your own EO blend the first exercise is to smell yourself. No kidding.

The smell of one's person is very individual, like a fingerprint, or a voice scan or a sample of your DNA. There is actually a funny story about a detective who catches the thief by smell. Our fears, hopes, and wishes, our dietary preferences, our health, our capacity to accept and release, emanate in the effusion of the fragrances that we generate.

As you become more odor perceptive you will begin to notice how we all tend to be "pre-packaged smell personas" as Christine Malcomb points out. We surround ourselves in familiar smells and have favorite scents that is likely based on our own intuition of what natural essential oils are best for us, what Smells and Memories*, we grew up with and the natural smell of our own skin.

Ayurvedic and Chinese physicians use smell as one of their principal methods in diagnosis. We all have our own very distinct odors.

I rescued a 130 pound Black Russian Terrier, who, unknown to me then was genetically engineered by the Russians to hunt humans. Oz*, who has been greatly gentled and now serves as our quality control expert, can tell by one whiff if someone familiar and friendly is approaching our home and if that person has brought him a treat or not. Strangers beware--until he gets to know you.

To discover your own smell persona don't take a bath after you exercise and don't wash your hair or splash on perfume. Take at least a couple of hours to smell how you smell. We will talk about it more later, but in a real basic sense you (your animal skin) is the fixative of your very personal blend. The oils in your skin mix with the oils you apply to create a very different blend than the same oils would on someone else. Your constitutional oils already take this into account to some extent but the best way to really do it is with your own sense of smell.

Write down how you smell to yourself. Keep it simple and don't be critical. As Popeye might say "You smell, how you smell" and somebody loves you just that way.

That's why we can now tell you the secret ingredient Cattullus hinted at the beginning of this page. It's you. It's how you smell when you've discovered what constitutional and personal oils you need to use and lifestyle changes you need to make to stay emotionally-sexually balanced.

If you stay with this perfumery process at the most perfect moment some special one who your find very attractive is going to ask you "What is that your wearing?" And what he will mean is, "Baby, you are just perfect the way you are." And he will at the most trustable and primitive level of Memory and Smell* truly mean it.
