(Salvia Sclarea)
Clary Sage has a sweet and herbal odor, soft and somewhat bitter-sweet. After the sweetness, it has a tea-like or balsamic staying note with a little spice. It has a curious, medicinal and lively kind of energy.
Clary sage should not be confused with common sage (Salvia Officinalis), which has upwards of 50% thujone, a potentially toxic ketone (abortificant) in it.
In terms of oriental medicine, clary sage both strengthens Qi-energy that is low, and also helps move Qi-energy that is stuck. So it both calms tension, and revives one from fatigue.
Clary sage is helpful with many health issues, see the chart below.
The psychological actions of clary sage are closely linked to its energetic ones, and the balance it creates between stimulation and relaxation. A general and neurotonic indicated for mental fatigue and nervous debility, the oil is, on the other hand, effective for calming the mind and easing tension. Strengthening yet relaxing, the net effect of clary sage oil is one of mental-emotional uplift, and of the euphoria for which the oil is srenowned.
