Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) has a warm, woody, earthy, relaxing and bitter sweet scent. It reminds me of vetiver, but more sedative, and not as sweet. A member of the valerian family, the herb is similar in its aroma and action to Indian valerian (but not stinky!). Native to the Himalayan mountains, the plant grows in Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim.
Spikenard is mainly used in modern aromatherapy for its regulating action on the nervous system and heart. In terms of Oriental medicine, it calms the Heart, stabilizes the Mind, and settles the emotions. Like valerian, it can be used for the nervous tension, anxiety, and insomnia.
